Not Every Question Deserves a 10-Minute Answer

Here’s something that’ll save you precious minutes in demos: about half the questions prospects ask aren’t actually questions.

They’re conversational fillers.

Someone asks about multi-language support, you launch into a 5-minute walkthrough of your internationalization features, and you watch their eyes glaze over.

Why? Because they were just making conversation, not evaluating a critical requirement.

The problem: You’re treating every question like it’s equally important. It’s not.

The fix: Reverse before you answer.

The Reversal Framework

Before diving into your answer, hit them with a quick reversal question.

This takes 3 seconds and tells you exactly how deep to go.

The reversal patterns:

  • “Great question… any reason you ask?”
  • “Happy to dig into that. What’s making you think about this?”
  • “I can tell your mind is going somewhere with that..?”

Real Example: The Language Question

Prospect: “Does your platform work in multiple languages?”

Bad approach (the filler answer): “Yes! We support 80+ languages including Spanish, French, German, Mandarin, Japanese, Korean… [continues for 3 minutes about RTL support, Unicode handling, and translation workflows].”

You just spent 3 minutes on something that might’ve been small talk.

Good approach (the reversal): “We do, yeah. Any specific reason you’re asking about that?”

Now watch what happens:

Scenario A (It’s just filler): Prospect: “Oh, just curious. We’re US-only right now but it made me think about the possibilities.”

You: “Got it. Yeah, we support 80+ languages when you need it.”

Done in 10 seconds. You identified it as a non-issue and kept momentum.

Most of the time, they don’t really care

Scenario B (It’s actually critical): Prospect: “Yeah, we’re expanding into APAC next quarter and our current tool doesn’t support Japanese or Korean properly.”

NOW you go deep. Because now you know it matters.

Your follow-ups:

  • “Which markets specifically? Just Japan and Korea or others too?”
  • “How are you handling localization today?”
  • “What’s breaking with your current setup?”
  • “What happens if you can’t solve this before the expansion?”

See the difference? Same initial question.

Completely different conversations.

The reversal told you which path to take.

Why This Works

1. You stop over-explaining irrelevant features. Most demos die from feature bloat, not lack of information. When you answer every question with a dissertation, you lose them.

2. You uncover the real concern. Sometimes “Does it work with Salesforce?” isn’t about integration capability. It’s about their ops person who only knows Salesforce and is scared of change. The reversal helps you find the actual issue.

3. You maintain control. Prospects respect people who ask good questions back. It positions you as a consultant, not a tour guide.

4. You save time for what matters. A 30-minute demo has maybe 18-20 minutes of actual content time. Every minute you waste on filler is a minute you can’t spend on the problem you actually solve.

When NOT to Reverse

Don’t do this for basic clarifying questions or when they’re clearly engaged and leaning in. If someone asks “Wait, so this report updates in real-time?” and they’re excited, just answer it.

The reversal is for sussing out priority level, not being difficult.

If you sense any frustration by you doing it over and over, also just cut to it. Give a short answer.

You can always expand if they ask.

Try This Tomorrow

In your next demo, count how many questions you answer without reversing first. I bet it’s most of them. Pick three questions and try the reversal.

You’ll be shocked how often the answer is “Oh, not really important, just curious.”

That’s your signal to give a tight answer and move on to stuff that actually matters for closing the deal.
